Architecture as an act of listening
Delshay Developments was founded on a refusal: we will not build on land that we do not understand. Before any project begins, our team spends a minimum of six months on site — observing light at different hours, tracing seasonal water movement, walking the paths that local communities have worn into the ground over generations. These observations become the brief.
The structures we create are specific to their places in a way that precludes replication. A Delshay building in Flores is not a Delshay building transposed from Bali — it is a response to entirely different conditions, materials, and communities. This is more difficult and more expensive. It is also the only way we know how to build well.
Materials from within reach
We have a firm preference for materials extracted within 100 kilometres of each project site. Not as a policy, but as a discipline that produces better architecture. When you build with local stone and local timber, the building already belongs to the landscape before the first wall is raised.
Our material library contains over 800 entries documented across fourteen years of projects throughout Southeast Asia, the Pacific, and the Indian Ocean islands. It is one of the most comprehensive private records of regional vernacular building materials in existence.
